Higher education is a critical requisite and an effective catalyst for social and economical change in Indian society. Matushri Virbaima Mahila Science and Home Science College is one of the institutions run by Shri Jalaram Uchcha Kelvani Mandal, pioneers in establishing institutes exclusively for the girls with the mission of empowering of women through quality higher education. Quality education is the very essence of our existence. Our attempt is to impart education that enhances the dignity of human beings and increases one’s self respect. The institution emphasizes all round development of its students. It aims not only at producing good professionals, but, also good and worthy citizens of great country, aiding in its overall progress and development.
Matushri Virbaima Mahila College was established in 1963 offering courses in the Arts faculty. In the year in 1970 and 1980 with the vision to create and awareness for science amongst girls, Science and Home Science faculty respectively were added to the existing college and the college was named Matushri Virbaima Mahila Arts, Science and Home Science College. The College was bifurcated from the Arts faculty in 1989 and came to be known as Matushri Virbaima Mahila Science and Home Science College. The college is recognized by the UGC under clause 2(f) and 12(b). The college is now a leading institute providing scientific education to the conservative segment of the regional society. The college showed its distinctive characteristics by in introducing the subject of Microbiology in 1970 and the Home Science faculty in 1980.
The college offers two UG programmes, B.Sc and B.Sc. (Home Science). The B.Sc. programme is offered with Chemistry and Microbiology as the principal subjects, and the B.Sc. (Home Science) programme is offered with Foods and Nutrition, Home Management and General Home Science as the principal subjects.
MVM’s 6.68 -acre campus has infrastructure facilities such as well equipped laboratories, library, auditorium, computer center, sports ground, intercom facility, etc. With students determined to excel, a group of competent and dedicated faculty, meticulously designed curriculum and the optimum infrastructure, our institution promises to be a leading institute in the field of education. Our target is to equip every student with the best education to help them achieve the best. We inculcate in them the best of creative abilities and technical qualifications, and also teach them the indispensable human qualities. We promise to provide the most effective platform to desirous and deserving students to acquire optimum skills needed for a successful career in various fields.
The college has 30 teaching staff members and 14 non teaching staff members. Amongst the teaching staff members 14 faculties hold the degree of Ph.D. The colleges is represented at the university by faculty members in the Board of Studies and play a vital role in the syllabus revision and design of the courses. A vast number of the teachers have attended seminars /workshops/conferences and published papers and books.
Although there is not much scope for research at the UG level, three minor research projects aided by the UGC have been completed, four of the faculties are recognized guides for the degree of Ph.D.
The faculty members provide a great deal of encouragement to the students for participation in the academic, sports and cultural activities. The students of the college have participated in inter-university, inter-college sports events and youth festivals. The college conducts its extension programmes through NSS unit.
The college has an auditorium hall with seating capacity of 700, and a play ground for various activities. The college has internet connectivity to supplement the learning tools. The administrative office is computerized to bring in quality in the administration. The campus has central library, e-resource centre, computer lab, and above all well qualified and experienced faculty.
The college has shown fairly good results in spite of the fact that the students at the entry level are generally considered to hail from average academic background.
